How to Dye Rayon Spandex

Using the appropriate dye and making a dye bath for the fabric helps to ensure that your clothing comes out looking like it was dyed by a professional.

Things You'll Need

• Fabric dye
• Bowl
• Bucket
• Soap

Instructions

1. Wash and dry the rayon-spandex item, according to care label, to ensure no dirt or dust blocks the dye.

2. Prepare the dye in a small bowl according to the instructions on the label. This usually involves mixing the dye powder with a few tablespoons of warm water. Look for a fiber-reactive dye, as these work best on synthetic fibers such as rayon and spandex.

3. Pour the recommended amount of water for the dye job into a bucket.

4. Pour the prepared dye into the bucket and mix well to make the dye bath. Submerge the rayon-spandex item into the bucket, submerging it in the dye bath.

5. Soak the item in the dye bath for 30 minutes to an hour. The longer you leave it in, the darker the color. Remove the item from the dye bath and wring out excess liquid.

6. Hand wash the dyed item in the sink, using a gentle soap such as shampoo or hand soap. Wring out excess water, then hang up to dry.
