Your heels and your walk make, or break an outfit.

When going to work, a party, shopping, or even running errands, women love to complete their looks with high heeled shoes. Some even feel it necessary to wear them. The height of the heel is ignored when it comes to style, so women usually end up wearing 5 to 6 inch heels, without any practice. Many find it difficult and painful to walk in such high heels gracefully. Follow the steps below to learn how to look poised and elegant in high heels.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy comfortable shoes. Make sure the shoes you're buying are your size. The arch should fit exactly into the arch of your foot. Just because a really cute pair of shoes is on sale, and you can squeeze into them, doesn't mean you should buy. Good quality and sturdy heels can go a long way.

    • 2

Put down your heel first, then your toes. Not the other way around! Never put down your whole foot at once. These small mistakes will make you look awkward. Putting your heel down however, will make your gait look more relaxed and natural.

    • 3

Take baby steps. When you're walking in heels, do not try to walk in big strides. Take small, calculated steps, so you don't lose your balance.

    • 4

Break in your heels. When you're buying new shoes, especially three inches or more, try wearing them at home for a couple of hours. You don't have to walk around constantly, even sitting on your couch in heels with your feet on the floor is enough. You'll get a feel of the shoes and be prepared before you wear them out on the town.

    • 5

Walk in a straight line. Put one foot in front of the other smoothly, as if you're on a runway. It'll make you look collected and elegant.

    • 6

Act like you're a supermodel. Watch runway shows and how models walk. Keep your back straight, shoulders back and chin up. Make sure you're legs are close together and straight when you're walking. Be confident, fearlessness will radiate off you.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid walking in dirt, grass, ice, or any surface into which your heels can sink. You'll end up breaking the heel, making it wobbly, or just getting marks on it.
