How to Refinish a Mahogany Hull
Mahogany is a truly beautiful wood, sturdy, enduring and aesthetically pleasing. If you are lucky enough to have a boat with a hull made of this material, then it would be a shame not to keep it in tip-top condition. You should make sure it remains smooth and clean, retains its shine and is well-protected. With a little know-how and some good products, you can do that with minimal fuss.

1
Use steel wool and a heavy-duty scouring pad to scrub the hull clean. You want to do your best to remove scum, dirt, mildew and anything else that may have built up since the last time the hull of your boat was cleaned.
-
2
Use sandpaper to remove any rust or imperfections and gradually bring through a fresh layer of mahogany. Handheld sandpaper is fine for most small or new boats. If a more industrial approach is required, then rent a grinder, attach a steel wire attachment and sand down the hull of the boat to bring through fresh wood.

Purchase a treating oil that contains wax. You will find a plethora of products on the market--Watco, Amazon, West Marine and Daly's SeaFin are just a few. Oils that contain wax will ensure a glossier finish and a longer life.

Brush the oil onto the hull of your boat. The oil will add gloss and protect against the elements and salt water. Once the first coat becomes clear, you can add more coats until you are happy with the finish.

Tips & Warnings
Although oil is the most common finish for the hull of a boat, you may wish to use a different material, such as wax or varnish. The preparation steps are the same--just change the final material.
