How to Block Those Annoying People on Facebook

Facebook's design makes it a simple task to keep up with all your friends' updates, listing them in chronological order in your news feed. However, your Facebook may become cluttered with too much information. If you are seeing too many apps and people who update a little too frequently, or if you are being contacted by people you want to avoid, you can control what information is displayed and block any people you want to.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to your Facebook account if you are not already signed in. Block settings are account specific, so any changes you make on your account will be the same no matter what device you access from.

    • 2

Click "Account" in the upper-right corner of the window, then click "Privacy Settings." At the bottom of the page, next to a small red circle icon, click the "Edit your lists" hyperlink.

    • 3

Block a specific person by typing a name or email into the appropriate text box at the top of the page, and clicking the blue "Block" button. You can block app and invite events from specific people by typing their names in the boxes below. Blocking someone this way means they cannot interact with you at all, or see any of your information.

    • 4

Remove updates from your news feed without blocking them completely by hovering over one of the updates on the news feed, clicking the "x" that appears to the right of the update, then clicking "Hide all by [name]." This will prevent you from seeing any of the person's updates in your feed, but you can still interact and view her profile. You can also use this method to hide any app updates from friends without blocking all of their updates.

To change your "hide" settings, click the small arrow to the right of "Most Recent" at the top of the page, then click "Edit Options."

Tips & Warnings

  • A quicker way to block someone (but one that only lets you block one at a time) is to visit the person's profile, scroll to the bottom of the left sidebar, then click "Report/Block This Person." To unblock that person, visit the Privacy Settings as explained above; the name will appear under the "Block Users" section.

  • You don't have to be someone's "friend" to block him. If someone who isn't a friend is bothering you, you can still block him by viewing his profile and scrolling to the bottom of the sidebar to block him that way.
