How to Use a Pendulum Correctly

How to Use a Pendulum Correctly thumbnail
Pendulums have a long history of use for both practical and mystical purposes.

Dowsing is an ancient art. Pendulums used for dowsing date back to ancient Egypt and China. These tools were used for eons to locate water, minerals and other natural items. They continue to be used today for finding underground water, and for mystical purposes such as locating ley lines in Earth's energy field. They are also used in divination and to help make choices in personal life and business. With practice and some basic know-how, you can learn to use a pendulum.

Things You'll Need

  • Pendulum made from clear quartz crystal or stone

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare your pendulum. Most people choose a pendulum made of common quartz crystal or a variation. Choose one on a light chain that will swing easily; alternatively, attach thin fishing line or filament to your pendulum. Before using the pendulum, "clear," or symbolically cleanse and dedicate, the crystal by soaking it in salt water overnight, or by applying your typical routine, such as prayer or meditation.

Prepare to use the pendulum. Get into a calm, centered state to attune yourself to the pendulum.

    • 3

Attune yourself to the pendulum and determine its positive and negative indicators. Stay neutral and hold the pendulum lightly between the thumb and first finger on your dominant hand. Let the pendulum move on its own; spinning it intentionally defeats the purpose. Hold the pendulum with a relaxed arm over your name written in large letters on a piece of paper. Say aloud, "This is my name." Wait until the pendulum responds to your energy field. It will either turn clockwise or counterclockwise. If it begins to turn clockwise, remove it from over your name, then hold it up again and simply state, "Clockwise means yes." Continue to test the pendulum, letting it stop moving between each question or remark. If it's still swinging when you ask another question, you'll get confusing results.

Question the pendulum. Test a few times with things you know to be true; for instance, hold the pendulum over a salt shaker and state, "This is table salt." If it spins as expected, go to the next item. Then, test it by saying things you know are false -- for instance, holding the pendulum over a book and stating that it is actually an elephant. Your results will confirm the yes and no answers. If there is a question or the pendulum stalls, make sure you are centered and retry the question. Be open to the possibility of unexpected outcomes. For example, if you expect a yes over what you think is salt, but get a no, someone might have put sugar in a salt shaker or the pendulum can't determine an answer. It may simply hang or swing back and forth without going in a circular direction.

Use the pendulum to check or verify quality or potency. You can test for health and well-being in body parts by holding the pendulum away from your body and stating things like, "My heart is healthy," or have someone else actually pendle over while you lie flat on a surface. Holding it over a map or a list of possible choices can help deduce answers, too.

Tips & Warnings

  • The trick with pendulums is to discern whether you are projecting your hoped-for response or not, so remain objective.

  • Typical height to hold the pendulum over an object is about an inch or two.

  • Don't try to use a pendulum when your personal energy field is affected by recent disturbances or upsets. The chances of your "interfering" unintentionally will increase, leading to confused information.

  • Dowsing isn't a game, though some people use it as such. Make wise decisions from any "information" you get from a pendulum, combined with your intuition and other methods, before making major life changes.
