How to Purchase on Craigslist

Buying and selling merchandise are among the primary functions of Web-based classifieds repository Craigslist, although the mechanism of doing so functions differently than it does on sites like eBay or Amazon.com. Namely, Craigslist advises users to deal only with locals or people nearby who can meet them locally. Make purchases in person whenever possible, never sight unseen or by providing financial information to the seller.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the seller to make sure the item is still available, then arrange an in-person meeting with the seller after you agree to purchase the item. Agree upon a public meeting point. Craigslist advises against meeting a potential seller at her or your home.

    • 2

Inspect the item thoroughly before you make a final decision to purchase. If you see a love seat you like on Craigslist but notice the item is run-down and dingy in person, don't agree to continue the purchase. Agreements you make via email are non-binding and if an item doesn't live it to what its seller promised, politely refuse the sale.

Pay the person in cash or using a secure electronic payment means, such as PayPal. Never provide the person your bank account information for a "wire transfer" -- all he'll use the information for is to harvest money from your bank account.
