How to Make a Quilting Block
A quilting block is a square piece of fabric sewn from several smaller pieces of fabric. Quilting blocks are sewn together to create quilt tops that can be layered with batting and backing, and used to make duvet covers, cushion covers, sheets and blankets. A nine-patch quilt block is a simple design that features nine equal sized squares. Once you master the sewing technique to create a nine-patch block, you can design and create more complex and intricate quilting blocks. Quilting blocks can be made out of cotton fabric from unwanted items of clothing, craft stores or online retailers.

1
Measure and cut nine 3-inch-by-3-inch squares.
-
2
Lay the squares onto your workspace in a 3-by-3 pattern to create one large square. Flip each of the squares over from top to bottom.

-
3
Attach the right side of the bottom left square to the left side of the bottom middle square together with sewing pins. Make sure the right sides of each fabric are together and the edges are perfectly aligned.
-
4
Sew a 1/4-inch seam along the edge, removing the pins as you go along. Repeat this technique to attach the bottom right square to the middle square.
-
5
Attach the three middle squares and the top three squares together, using the same technique. You will now have three strips of fabric.
-
6
Attach the top side of the bottom strip to the bottom side of the middle strip, ensuring that all the edges are aligned. Sew a 1/4-inch seam. Repeat this technique to attach the middle and top strips together. Turn the finished quilt block over and press with an iron.
