Instructions

    • 1

Examine your sewing machine. There should be hash marks on the plate under the needle. The hash marks are to the right of the needle. Find the 1/4-inch mark; this means that from the needle to the mark is 1/4 inch. If your marks aren't labeled, hold your measuring tape under the needle to find 1/4 inch. Mark the width with a straight line of masking tape or other marker.

    • 2

Thread your machine with the thread of your choice. When doing most sewing crafts, use a thread that blends in with the fabric.

    • 3

Put your fabric under the needle; the edge of the fabric should be to the right of the needle.

    • 4

Line the edge up with the 1/4-inch mark. Slowly press the sewing machine foot pedal to get the needle started.

    • 5

Guide the fabric under the needle, always keeping the edge of the fabric along the 1/4-inch mark.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sew slowly to keep the fabric under control. As you get more experienced, you will be able to go faster.
