Cut the stump as low to the ground as possible with a chain saw without creating a safety hazard. Wear safety goggles to prevent injury to your eyes.

Drill six to seven holes in the top of the tree stump. Using a 1-1/2-inch drill bit at least 8 inches long, drill the holes at a slight angle about 8 inches deep.

3
Fill the holes with saltpeter.

4
Pour boiling water into the holes over the saltpeter. Do not overfill the holes. The water will cause the saltpeter to flow into the tree trunk. Once the water is gone, add more water. Continue adding boiling water until you have flushed away all the saltpeter.
