How to Honor Veterans' Families
Veterans risk, and often sacrifice, their lives for Americans' freedom, so it is important that communities honor these veterans and their families. Communities can show appreciation for the veterans' service in a number of ways, and their families will be comforted by the community's thoughtfulness. Whether you host a formal celebration to honor veterans and their families or simply say thank you to a veteran you know, the gesture will be appreciated.

1
Host a Veterans Day parade in your community. Even if all local veterans are not in attendance, their families will enjoy the honor bestowed upon their loved ones. Let veterans' families participate in the parade, riding on floats and in cars. Simply having the community at the parade to support the veterans will honor their contribution to the country.

2
Visit and decorate veterans' graves. Leave an American flag or a wreath featuring red, white and blue flowers on the grave of a veteran that you know. Do this anytime of year, although Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Veterans Day are especially meaningful days in the lives of veterans' families.

Host a Memorial Day ceremony to honor lost veterans. Invite family members to attend, and read off the names of those veterans you are honoring. Have a local veteran speak to the achievements of these veterans, and give each veterans' family a small American flag or floral bouquet to honor the veteran.

4
Thank veterans and their families that you know. Often, a veteran's contribution is overlooked. It is never too late to thank the veteran and his family for his service to the country. Write a letter to the veteran's family detailing how much you appreciate his service. Or, tell his family in person.
