How to Draw a Robot Monkey

How to Draw a Robot Monkey thumbnail
When drawing, start with basic shapes and work up to more complexity.

A robot monkey offers all the fun of a monkey, plus the gadgets and science-fiction wonder of a robot in one fun package. That a robot monkey doesn't exist will not prevent you from drawing one. Learning how to draw a robot monkey is like learning to draw anything else - you have to start with a simple set of shapes and work upward, adding more detail as you go until your drawing is complete.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide which type of robot to draw. Cartoon robots generally fall into two types: clunky box type robots like the ones in old sci-fi films, and smooth, ergonomic robots like the ones in contemporary films. The type of robot you decide on will determine the basic shapes used to construct it, as a clunky robot will use more rectangles and squares than circles or ovals.

    • 2

Construct your robot using basic shapes. You will need a large central shape for the body, either a rectangle or an ellipse, and two smaller shapes for the face. The mouth and muzzle of a monkey will protrudes from the lower front of the face. Draw tubes ending in either a circle or a square, making up the arms and legs. Draw a fifth tube from the lower back of the central shape for the tail.

    • 3

Sketch in the shape of the robot monkey, using the basic shapes as a guide. This is where you decide exactly what the monkey will look like, such as whether the body is made from a single piece of metal or is several blocks stacked on top of each other. Sketch in details such as the shape of the eyes, and any visible rivets where sheets of metal join together.

    • 4

Draw over the original sketch with an ink pen or a darker pencil to highlight the parts of the drawing you want to keep. Add any final additional details, such as shading and highlights where light is shining on the robot monkey. Wait for the ink to dry, if you have used ink, then carefully erase the extraneous visible lines from your original sketch.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a light pencil such as a 2H or 4H to draw the basic shapes and your initial sketches. These will not show up as strongly on the paper and will therefore not get in the way of the final image as much as if you used a darker pencil. They are also far easier to erase when the drawing is complete.

  • Do not put too much detail into the robot monkey, either at the initial sketching stage or when adding final details. Not only will this drastically increase the difficulty of drawing the monkey but you will also face the problem of potentially ruining the drawing by overcrowding it. Stick to the basic sketch and then add in some key details such as eyes and joints at first.
