How to Report Illegal Immigrants to the INS

The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) stopped functioning under that name as of March 2003. The agency adopted a new name, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, for public use. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency handles reports of suspicious activity or a known illegal immigrants. Anyone can report suspected illegal immigration activity to ICE anonymously over the telephone.

      Record important details about the suspected illegal immigrant, including the estimated height, weight and other physical characteristics. If you know the suspect's name, write down that information as well, even if only a nickname or alias.

      Write down the individual's last known whereabouts, including the address or crossroads, or type of location such as a restaurant or grocery store. If the suspected illegal immigrant drove a vehicle, then record the make and model of the vehicle and license plate number.

      Dial 1-866-DHS-2-ICE (1-866-347-2423). When the operator answers the phone, indicate you want to report suspicious activity related to illegal immigration. The operator will proceed to ask you a series of questions. Refer to your notes if you need help answering any of the questions.

  • Do not put yourself in harm's way to get additional information if you fear an immediate threat to your safety. Call the local authorities first in the event of danger and then call the ICE hotline with the details.

  • If you prefer to remain anonymous, let the ICE hotline operator know.
