How to Filter Messages That Are Forwarded From Another Mail Server in Gmail

You can protect yourself from offensive or unwanted messages that are coming at you from various email addresses by aggressively creating filters when these messages hit your inbox. Unless you begin filtering spam messages like these, they will likely continue coming day after day. Gmail offers you a robust filtering system with which you can create custom filters that should prevent these messages from getting through to your inbox. If you are diligent in creating your filters and blocking email addresses, you can reduce the amount of spam that you have to deal with every day.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to your Gmail account and then click the checkbox to the left of the forwarded message.

    • 2

Click the gray "More Actions" button located on the right-hand side of the page.

    • 3

      Click "Filter messages like these."

    • 4

      Click "Next Step."

    • 5

Select the desired action from the list that appears on-screen and then click "Create Filter."

Tips & Warnings

  • The simplest way to ensure that you never see email from this person or organization again is to select the "Delete it" filter.

  • If you want to keep the emails without seeing them in your primary inbox, you can use the "Forward it to" option. Gmail will forward the message to one of your forwarding addresses. You can then retrieve the offensive messages at a future date if you need to.

  • Once you click "Filter messages like these" you can see the email address that is being used to reach your inbox listed in the "From" field.

  • If you receive several offensive messages from different address that contain the same content you can filter these as well. Simply delete the email address in the "From" field, click within the "Contains the words" field and enter several key phrases from the message. This should result in a filter that deletes these messages automatically.
