How to Shorten Blinds With a Roller Mechanism

How to Shorten Blinds With a Roller Mechanism thumbnail
You can shorten and lock horizontal blinds in place.

Most horizontal-slat blinds have a roller mechanism mounted in the head rail. It uses a string threaded through the head rail, the slats and the bottom rail to lift and lower the blind. The roller mechanism works in conjunction with a locking mechanism, which allows you to shorten the blind and lock it in place. It only takes a few minutes to get the hang of performing the task. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Grip the string hanging down from the right side of the blind. In some cases, the string may be on the left side of the blind. You can easily locate the string by looking at the bottom edge of the head rail. The string comes out through a hole in the bottom of the head rail.

    • 2

Pull down on the string to raise and shorten the blind.

    • 3

Hold the string taut and then pull it sharply to the side. You will hear an audible click to indicate that the lock inside the roller mechanism engaged the string.

    • 4

Loosen the tautness of the string to ensure it stays in an upright positing and then let go of the string.
