How to Spray Color-Shifting Paint

Color-shifting spray paint changes colors when you look at it from different angles and under different lighting. This fun and innovative spray paint, available under several different spray paint brands, can give wood, metal and plastic objects a rainbow shine, making them perfect for outdoor sports equipment, home decor and even furniture. Instructions

    • 1

Place a large plastic tarp or garbage bag down on your work surface. Your work surface should be in a well-ventilated room to protect you from accumulated spray paint fumes.

    • 2

Place the object you'd like to spray paint onto the tarp, and clean the object thoroughly. Dampen a cloth with detergent or mineral spirits to wipe the object down with --- a dirty object will not hold spray paint well. After the object is dry, use blue painter's tape to cover any areas that you do not want to paint.

    • 3

Shake the can of color-shifting spray paint for 30 seconds to ensure that the chemicals inside are well mixed.

    • 4

Remove the cap, and hold the spray paint bottle upright. Press the nozzle to release a stream of paint at the tarp --- but not at the object being painted.

    • 5

Move the spray paint can to the object you want to paint, while continuing spraying. Holding the can about 6 inches away from the object, spray a light, even coat of paint over the object. Use long, even, side-to-side coats for best coverage. When you're done, keep spraying and move the can past the end of the object; then release your finger from the nozzle. Paint the entire object using this method.

    • 6

Allow 2 hours for the object to dry completely.

    • 7

Repeat steps 3 through 6 to add a second coat of paint. You can add as many coats as you'd like --- keep in mind that the more coats you paint on the object, the more dramatic the iridescent effect will be.

    • 8

Allow the object to dry for a full 24 hours before using or displaying it.
