How to Protect My Graphic Design Sketches

How to Protect My Graphic Design Sketches thumbnail
Protect your graphic design sketches via watermark or JavaScript.

Protecting graphic design sketches is a common concern for artists who would like to put their content online. This can be accomplished by watermarking the image or safeguarding it with JavaScript. These methods help prevent images from being hot-linked (bandwidth theft), copied (copy and paste) or used without your consent. While there is no foolproof way to protect your graphic design sketches from all Internet users, these methods will protect them from the majority.

Instructions

  1. Watermarking

    • 1

Open your image in a trusted watermarking or photo editing program. Popular examples include Adobe Photoshop, GIMP or Paint.

    • 2

Select the "Text" icon from the toolbar. Place the cursor where you would like to see the watermark on your image. Hold down the left button on your mouse and pull down to make the size of the text box larger.

    • 3

Type the watermark text into the box. Watermark text is generally your name or website URL. Make the text a light grey color by using your color toolbar. This will help to blend the text so that the image is still visible.

    • 4

Add a photo to use as a watermark on your image. While optional, some artists prefer to use an image rather than text, or they use both. Decrease the brightness of the watermark image or change it to gray scale. Paste the watermark photo onto the graphic design sketch.

    • 5

Save the completed graphic design sketch with watermark to your computer. The image should be saved as JPEG or GIF as these formats generally provide the best quality on the web.

    No-Right-Click

    • 6

Install no-right-click JavaScript code to each of your graphic design sketches. This will disable users from right-clicking the image and saving it to their computers. It will also display a pop-up message indicating that the image is copyrighted.

    • 7

Insert the disable right-click code between the header tags (<head> and </head>) on each image you would like to protect. This code can be found in the resources section. Copy and paste your website's code into a code editor, such as Notepad++. Copy and paste the disable-right-click code anywhere between the (<head> and </head>) code. Upload the edited code to your hosting site to replace the old code.

    • 8

Upload the image with the script onto your webpage. Test your webpage in your Internet browser to ensure that right-clicking is disabled.
