Ping is a easy-to-use native utility on all operating systems.

Ping is a network administration utility that is used to check the status of a specific computer on a network. When a computer is pinged, data is sent over a network or the Internet to that computer. The computer then generates a reply to the ping that is sent back on the same route, confirming the computer's presence on the network or the Internet. Ping service is typically used to diagnose Internet connectivity issues. Ping program is native to every operating system and can easily be used to check the status of your computer on a network or the Internet.

Instructions

    • 1

Find out your PC's IP address ahead of time --- when you want to ping your computer, it will be because you don't have access to it at that time. A number of websites can show you your computer's IP address, including WhatIsMyIPAddress.com, WhatsMyIP.org, WhatIsMyIP.org and WhatIsMyIP.com. Be aware, however, that some computers' IP addresses may change from time to time --- sometimes very frequently, sometimes only after long intervals.

Click the "Start" button on the bottom left corner of your desktop. Type "cmd" in the search bar and press the "Enter" key. The emulated DOS console will launch in a new window.

    • 3

Type the command "ping," then press "Space" and type your PC's IP address. Press the "Enter" key to run the command.

    • 4

Observe the ping results in the console window. If your PC is properly connected to the network, you will see a message of "Reply from <your PC's IP address>." If you are suffering from a network connectivity issue or if your PC has a connectivity problem, you will get a "Request timed out" message.
