How to Draw Clouds in the Sky
Clouds, while hardly ever the main focus of a drawing, can add a whole new level of dimension and realism to any scene. The many different types of clouds can be used to set a mood, a scene, or even add hints and clues to a picture most people would overlook. For something so simple, they can be extremely difficult to draw realistically, especially if you're drawing with pencils on paper. Fortunately, there's a very simple trick to it.

1
Decide what kind of clouds you want to draw. Researching different types of clouds may help you decide. If the clouds are a background in a larger picture, consider how the type of cloud will mesh with the overall drawing.
-
2
Gently run the pencil over the designated sky area, using strokes of even length. Once the sky is covered with light strokes, go over it again in the opposite direction to create a cross-hatch pattern.

3
Rub the cloth gently over the cross-hatch pattern to blend and smooth it.
-
4
Use your eraser to draw the shape of the clouds out of the gray. Remember the different shapes depending on what type of cloud you're drawing.
-
5
Use your pencil to add detail and refine the edge if desired.

Tips & Warnings
When erasing the clouds from your gray background, blow away the eraser debris, or wipe gently with the cloth rather than using your hand. This will help avoid smudging.
