Becoming an actor in New York can be hard work but the payoff is worth it.

New York City is home to thousands of actors trying to make it on Broadway, television and film. The acting scene is extremely competitive and only the most talented, well-connected and lucky actors land leading roles in movies and plays. Many unknown actors manage to survive on their acting work alone, while others must support themselves with a day job. New York is an expensive city that, although it offers a world of opportunities, can be a very challenging place to for a struggling actor.

      Prepare for a career as an actor early on in life. Take acting, singing and dance classes. Audition for plays at your high school and in the community. Make acting a primary focus in your life and prepare yourself for a lifetime commitment to this challenging but rewarding profession.

      Get a formal education. Obtain a bachelor's degree in drama or theater. Include coursework in English, theater history, performance techniques, theater production, dance and related areas.   • Don't be afraid to try new things. The likelihood that you'll land a leading role on Broadway is slim but there are plenty of other opportunities for actors. Take a minor role in a film or TV show because it could lead to something bigger.
