How to Find the Top Searches for a Domain
Keyword research is the bread and butter of successful online businesses. The ability to choose targeted keywords with a high search volume and relatively low competition in terms of either number or search engine optimization can be the difference between ranking No. 1 or No. 1 million in the search results. One little-known method for finding lucrative keywords is to find the top searches for a domain that ranks well for a very competitive keyword. In most cases, these websites are owned by professional Internet marketers who have taken the time to find other keywords that are worth pursuing.

1
Enter the domain into the "website" field of the Google Adwords Keyword Tool (see Resources). This is one of the most popular free keyword research tools available. Changes to the interface in 2010 allowed users to extract the keywords Google identifies as relevant to a domain of your choice. The information may be filtered by language and country to make the search more relevant to your local market if necessary. It is a good starting place to find out which keywords the domain is associated with and the number of monthly searches conducted by Google users for each keyword.

Type the domain into the Spyfu search engine (see Resources). The full power of Spyfu requires a subscription. However, the website offers a number of free tools that can point you in the right direction for keyword research. The tool is mainly a pay-per-click comparison engine, but it shows a set of 10 random search terms for which the targeted domain ranks in the top 50. It also states the total number of terms it ranks for in the top 50, but you must be a member to see all of the terms and related information.

This website displays a number of pertinent data sets, including valuable keyword data for both pay-per-click campaigns and organic search results. It comes in both a free- and subscription-based service. The free service displays eight random keywords as well as the search engine ranking for each in the major search engines. In addition, iSpionage shows the average search volume and cost per click for each of the keywords to help gauge their individual values. Paid users get access to all of the top keywords and corresponding information on each.
