How to Redeem Walmart Gift Cards

How to Redeem Walmart Gift Cards thumbnail
Walmart sells plastic gift cards or online eGift cards.

As of the end of 2010, Walmart operated over 4,300 stores in the United States, with a presence in all 50 states. This chain of department stores has a presence in thousands of American towns. Walmart gift cards can be redeemed not only at Walmart stores but also online and at the membership-only warehouse club, Sam's Club, which is owned by the Walmart corporation. These stores stock everything from bananas to socks, and consumers can use their gift cards to buy anything the stores sell.

Instructions

  1. Online

    • 1

Choose items that you want to buy at the Walmart of Sam's Club websites. Once you choose each option, click the button that allows you to add the item to your virtual shopping cart.

    • 2

Go to your shopping cart when you're ready to check out. Choose the option that allows you to purchase items with a gift card.

    • 3

Enter your gift card number and your PIN in the spaces provided. Your PIN is located on the back of your card under a silver strip. Scratch off this strip to reveal this number. If you're using a Walmart eGift card, these numbers are located in the email you received from Walmart when the gift card was sent to you.

    • 4

Follow the rest of the check-out instructions. If your total is more than the amount of your gift card, you'll need to enter your credit card information or use a second gift card.

    In Stores

    • 5

Visit a Walmart or Sam's Club store. Choose merchandise you'd like to purchase.

    • 6

Take your merchandise to a register. Once the clerk rings everything up and gives you a total, swipe your card through the card reader or hand the card to the clerk.

    • 7

Pay any remaining balance with cash, credit card or another Walmart gift card. If your purchase is less than the amount on your card, the clerk can tell you how much balance remains.

Tips & Warnings

  • Walmart eGift cards can only be used online at walmart.com or samsclub.com, but not in stores.

  • You don't need to activate Walmart gift cards unless you've purchased more than 25 cards or the card has a balance of over $250. If you do need to activate the card, this can be done at Walmart.com.

  • Gift cards can't be redeemed for cash. If you want to return a purchase you made using a gift card, Walmart will credit the amount back to the original card.

  • If you create an account at Walmart.com and save your gift card information to it, the company can send you a new card if yours is lost or stolen.
