How to Close Bay Windows

How to Close Bay Windows thumbnail
Most bay windows are opened and closed with cranks.

Bay windows feature a structure that stands out from an exterior wall and creates a wide sill in the window that can be used for houseplants or a window seat. Bay windows are hinged on the side for opening and closing, rather than being slid up and down like a standard double-hung window.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the crank at the bottom of the window clockwise to swing the open window around and into the frame.

    • 2

Apply gentle pressure to the crank to be sure that the window is seated within its frame. Bay windows have gaskets that fit between the window and the frame to prevent leakage. The window has to be shut tightly to make this gasket effective.

    • 3

Close the latches on the side of the bay window. These are located on the side of the window that swings out went it is opened, opposite the side that the hinges are attached to. Closing these latches on the window will pull it in tightly to the frame, and lock it securely so it can't be opened from outside.
