How to: Higher Catch Rate for "Pokemon"

When capturing a Pokemon, the player may notice that some breeds of Pokemon resist capture more than other breeds. Players can improve the catch rate, making it more likely that Pokemon will be captured. Circumstances ranging from your attack methodology to the items you use during battle can influence whether or not you stroll to the Pokemon Center with a captured Pokemon. Create a Pokemon party of varying types for an immediate boost to your capture rate.

Instructions

    • 1

Use status effect abilities, such a "Sleep Powder" or "Poison Powder" on the opponent. Fire-type or Ice-type attacks can also be used to cause the Freeze or Burn status effects. "Frozen" and "Sleep" status effects cause the greatest increase to the capture rate. "Poison" and "Burn" status effects also increase the capture rate, but less than "Frozen" and "Sleep."

    • 2

Attack the opponent to weaken it as much as possible. The weaker the Pokemon, the more your catch rate increases. Some Pokemon also have an inherent catch or capture rate higher than other types of Pokemon.

    • 3

Use strong Pokeballs to capture the Pokemon. The Master Ball guarantees a Pokemon's capture. Meanwhile, a Pokeball, Great Ball, Cherish Ball, Luxury Ball and Heal Ball provide a slight increase to the capture rate. As the weight of a Pokemon increases, the Heavy Ball's catch rate improves. View the description of the Pokeball you intend to use. Some Pokeballs are more effective against particular types of Pokemon.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some Pokemon, such as Caterpie, demonstrate a high capture rate at 255, which is the maximum. The Psypoke Psydex lists the capture rate of each Pokemon in its online Pokedex. The lower the capture rate number, the more difficulty the player will experience in capturing that Pokemon. Type in the name of the Pokemon and click "Search" to view its entry. Use Pokemon types that are strong against your opponent. If your opponent is a Water-type, for example, select an Electric- or Grass-type Pokemon for battle. These Pokemon will cause greater damage during each attack than other types.

  • While items like the Master Ball make it impossible for Pokemon to escape, the player should reserve the use of that Pokeball for legendary Pokemon, such as Mewtwo, Ho-Oh or another rare Pokemon, since the Master Ball is very rare.
