Your toddler may enjoy flying if you carefully prepare for the trip.

Air travel is difficult enough when you're flying solo. Add a toddler into the mix and you may face a rough ride ahead. You will forget the air turbulence as you face toddler turbulence. Your child can become tired and fussy and his ears may hurt from the air pressure. You must prepare for your trip carefully so that your toddler will stay calm and relaxed during the flight.

Instructions

    • 1

Pack a bag of supplies to carry on. Bring things like your toddler's favorite toys or stuffed animals. Pack crayons and paper. Add a couple of treats, like lollipops or cookies, to comfort your child. Bring a blanket and juice, along with a bottle or sippy cup. You can buy the juice at the airport after passing through the security line, or you can bring your own if you separate it from your other liquids and gels, declare it to a security officer and present it for additional inspection.

Buy your toddler her own seat. She needs to be comfortable so she can remain calm. Give her a pillow and encourage her to stretch out, or bring her car seat, which may make her both more safe and more comfortable. Children are not required to use car seats on planes, but both the Federal Aviation Administration and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend them.

Be prepared for ear pain caused by pressure changes. Give your toddler his bottle or sippy cup during the takeoff and landing. The sucking and swallowing will help to alleviate any ear pain that may occur. Alternatively, you can give him his lollipop.

    • 4

Dress your toddler carefully. Make sure his clothes are not too tight. Dress him in layers so that you can take some of the clothes off if he gets hot.

    • 5

Give your toddler an activity. For instance, ask him to draw a picture of the plane. This may keep your toddler occupied and focus his concentration. Books and travel toys are also helpful. Some parents like to surprise traveling kids with one or two small new toys during the trip, which may help to hold their interest longer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Allow your toddler to walk around the airport before the flight. This may help tire her out.

  • Take your toddler to the bathroom before you board the plane.

  • Soothe your toddler if his ear pain continues. Sing him a song or rub his ears. You can also pick him up and walk him around the cabin once you're in the air.
