Microsoft Word 2010 has the ability to make quotation marks point in the correct direction: up at the beginning of a quoted word, phrase or passage and down at the end. Some people disable this function, however, because they prefer to use straight quotation marks that point in no direction for maximum compatibility with other software. If your installation of Word 2010 has been configured in this manner, you can change the AutoCorrect options to fix it.
Step 1
Click the blue "File" tab in the upper-left corner of the Microsoft Word 2010 window, then click "Options."

Click the "Proofing" sub-category on the left side of the Word Options window.

Click the "AutoCorrect Options..." button. A new window titled "AutoCorrect" appears.

Click the "AutoFormat" tab.

Click to place a check in the box labeled "Straight quotes with smart quotes" under the "Replace" sub-heading.

Click the "AutoFormat As You Type" tab.

Click to place a check in the box labeled "Straight quotes with smart quotes" under the "Replace as you type" sub-heading.

Click "OK" twice.
