How to Transfer My WordPress Blog to a Database Backup

WordPress blogs use MySQL as a back-end database server. WordPress provides you with a backup plug-in, so you can back up your entire database and its content to a file. You use this backup to restore blog posts and comments in case the database fails. It's recommended you should back up a database before each upgrade to protect data.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a Web browser and type the domain name for your blog in the navigation text box. After the page loads, click the "Admin" link and log into the WordPress dashboard.

    • 2

Click the "Administration" panel link on the left side. Click "Plugins Panel," then click "Add New." In the search text box, type "WP-DB-Backup." In the search results, click "Download" to download the WordPress files to your blog.

    • 3

Click "Activate" to activate the new backup plug-in. Click the "Tools" link in the "Administration" panel on the left. Click "Backup Panel." A dashboard window opens with a list of backup options.

Click "Backup" to perform the backup. It takes several minutes to create the file. If you chose "Email" for a backup option, the file is emailed to you. Otherwise, the backup file is available to download on the server after the "Success" message returns.
