How to Decode My Own Skype Logs

Skype keeps a log of all of your communications unless you've disabled this feature using the Privacy options. If you remove one of your Skype contacts you may not be able to find the log for that person in your recent message history, but the records have not totally disappeared. The log is stored in a hidden directory on your computer in an encrypted format. NirSoft's free SkypeLogView program allows you to retrieve and backup these logs.

Instructions

    • 1

Download SkypeLogView from nirsoft.net. Right-click the downloaded file in Windows Explorer, choose "Extract All," and click "Extract" to reveal the application in a new folder.

    • 2

Right-click Skype's icon in the notification area of the taskbar and choose "Quit." This closes Skype completely, so that the log files can be accessed.

    • 3

Launch SkypeLogView from the folder it was extracted to. You do not need to install it to use it.

    • 4

Read the log file in SkypeLogView's window. Each message or call has its own record entry, and you can double-click one to see its details. If the log you want doesn't appear, choose "Select Logs Folder" from the "File" menu. Click the ellipsis (...) button, and look within the "Skype" directory shown for the user name you want the log for. Select the folder and click "OK," then click "OK" again to access the log.

    • 5

Click the "View" menu, then choose "HTML Report - All Items" to open a more readable version of the log in your web browser. You can also select some records and choose "HTML Report - Selected Items" to view only those.

    • 6

Select one or more records, then choose "Save Selected Items" from the "File" menu to backup the selected records to a text file. Choose a location and name for the backup in the dialog that appears, and click "Save."
