How to Install Water Conditioning Salts

Water conditioning salts are poured into a water softener or water conditioning tank. The salt mixes with water in the tank to create brine that regenerates the water conditioning system. These systems help to soften hard water, making it more drinkable and less harsh for bathing and washing laundry. You should install salt into the system whenever the water level is above the salt level. Check the system's water level once a month. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Remove the lid from the brine tank. Examine the inside of the tank to make sure the water level is above the salt level. If not, you don't need to install more salt in the tank. Otherwise, continue with the remaining steps.

    • 2

Use a wooden spoon or broom handle to break up any dried, crusty salt stuck to the side of the brine tank. Poke the salt in the bottom of the tank to make sure it is not solid. If it is, break it up with your tool.

    • 3

Pour in the salt recommended by your water conditioner manufacturer. Add salt until the unit is half full. The salt should be 3 to 4 inches above the water level when the tank is half full of salt. If it is not, adjust the water level according to the manufacturer's instructions, or have a technician come adjust it for you.
