To be a certified science teacher in Texas, one must pass the TExES Science 8-12 Exam. This certification exam assesses whether one has the skills and knowledge to teach high school science. The testee is provided with a scientific calculator, a copy of the Periodic Table, and a formula reference sheet. If you are taking this exam, it is important to study and be well-prepared.

      Study the scientific vocabulary and be familiar with terminology used in the TEKS science standards for high school students. Review notes and content from all of the tested content areas.

      The areas tested by the TExES are:

      scientific method, scientific inquiry, and scientific processes, physics, chemistry, cell structure and processes, heredity and evolution of life, diversity of life, relationships and interdependence of life and environmental systems, history, structure, and function of the earth and the earth's systems, the solar system and the universe, and methods of science instruction and assessment.

      Read and complete practice problems. Many resources exist to help pre-teachers study for this exam. Visit your local library to see if they have any resource books available for the TExES Science 8-12 Exam. Bookstores and online sellers will have these practice books available.       Complete practice problems that involve using formulas. Become familiar with using your scientific calculator and formula sheet to solve problems.

      Make flashcards on index cards with terms or content that you are not completely sure of. Write the vocabulary term on the front of the card and the definition or an example on the back of the card. Quiz yourself with the flashcards, to see if you can recall the information. Go through the stack of cards and make a pile of any of the terms you did not remember to allow yourself additional time to review these.
