How to Crochet a Tapered Head-Warmer
Head-warmers are versatile accessories that help keep your head and ears protected from the cold. They can also double as headbands to coordinate with outfits from your wardrobe. This tapered head-warmer pattern creates a long strip of crocheted fabric. The tapered ends are tied around the back of your head, similar to a bandana. You can use this head-warmer to cover your ears on snowy or windy days, or keep it tucked behind your ears in more temperate weather.

Crochet Techniques Used
-
1
Make the chain stitch by creating a slipknot in the yarn and placing it on your crochet hook. Bring the yarn over the tip of the hook, going from front to back. Catch the yarn and draw it through the slipknot's loop as you drop that loop from the hook. You have made the first chain stitch, with a new loop remaining on your hook. Catch the yarn again and draw it through the new loop as you drop it to make the second chain stitch. Continue making chain stitches in this manner until you reach the prescribed amount.
-
2
Make the single crochet stitch by inserting your hook into a previously worked stitch. There should already be one loop on your hook. Catch the yarn, pull it through the stitch and draw a new loop onto the hook. Catch the yarn again and pull it through the two loops as you drop them from the hook. A single new loop should remain.

Make a single crochet decrease by inserting the hook into a previously worked stitch. There should already be a loop on your hook. Catch the yarn, pull it through the stitch and draw a new loop up onto the hook. Then insert the hook into the next stitch, repeating the steps to draw up another loop. Catch the yarn and draw it through all three loops as you drop them from the hook.

4
Begin to finish off your crochet project when you have reached the end of the pattern and you only have one loop remaining on your hook. Cut the yarn, leaving a long strand. Draw the yarn through the loop, going from left to right and pulling the yarn tightly to secure it. Thread the yarn through the tapestry needle, then weave in the loose end by working the needle in and out of the sides of two or more stitches several times. Weave in all other loose ends the same way.
