How to Weave a Ball

A monkey's fist is a knot that allows you to create a ball out of a single piece of rope or cord by wrapping it in a series of loops and weaves through the loops. When completed the monkey's fist can serve both as an ornament on the end of a rope as well as a method of adding weight to the end of a line in order to make it easier to swing or throw.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap the cord around your fingers three times.

    • 2

Weave the end of the cord through the loop then wrap around the three prior loops three times, creating a cross shape.

    • 3

Weave the loose end through the center of the second set of loop then wrap three times around the second set of loops, perpendicular to the first set of loops. You will be left with three sets of three loops which create a roughly round shape, with gaps between the sets of loops.

    • 4

Create a loop in the end of the cord, then pass the loose end through the loop and pull to create an overhand knot.

    • 5

Tuck the overhand knot inside the loose ball shape.

    • 6

Pull on the main line of the cord while pressing down on the loops to tighten the knot into a compact ball around the knotted section.
