Always apply sunscreen when spending time outdoors.

Sunscreen is a necessity when spending time outdoors. A good sunscreen protects against UVA and UVB rays, helps prevent skin cancer and slows the aging effects of the sun. When choosing a sunscreen, consider the activities that you will be doing outdoors. Different sunscreen formulas are required for sports, water activities or use by children. The SPF of the sunscreen indicates how long you can wear it before re-applying and what percentage of UVA and UVB rays will be blocked. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Look at the labels. Each bottle or tub of sunscreen will state the SPF and the conditions under which it protects.

Purchase a higher SPF for increased protection. SPF 15 blocks about 93 percent of the sun's rays while SPF 50 blocks about 98 percent.

Find the word "waterproof" on the bottle. "Waterproof" refers to sunscreen that protects for more than an hour when worn in water. There are tinted waterproof sunscreens, but to waterproof a non-waterproof tinted sunscreen, you would need to apply a separate layer of waterproof sunscreen over the tinted sunscreen.
