How to Play VST Instruments

Modern technology allows musicians to create music right from their computers. Instead of recording multiple instruments in a studio, people can load special digital instruments and create musical patterns from the machine. The VST system, developed by Steinberg, recreates synthesizers and other instruments in software form. VST instruments can be integrated in a digital audio workstation to create songs. Setting up and playing a VST instrument requires following a few simple steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Open an installed digital audio workstation. The application must be VST 2.0 compatible. Cubase, FL Studio and Reason are all digital audio workstations that are compatible with VSTs.

    • 2

Locate the folders in the personal computer where the digital audio workstation's files are stored (typically in Program Files). Drag the .DLL file for the VST into the digital audio workstation's plug-ins folder. The virtual instrument will now be displayed in the application.

    • 3

Access the digital audio workstation's VST instruments. After opening the application, select the menu entitled "Audio," "Panels," "Channels," "Instruments or something similar. Select the VST instrument of choice and allow it to load within the application.

    • 4

Play the virtual instrument using the computer's keyboard. On special VST instruments, choose between one of the pre-installed synthesized sounds or instruments first. If you have a connected MIDI keyboard, use the keyboard to play notes from the VST.
