Instructions

    • 1

Gather an assortment of photos from different events or occasions. Arrange some of the images together by a certain theme and in the same style of frame to make a strong design impact, or use the same color matting to unify a group of pictures when there is no common theme among them.

    • 2

Use graph paper or paper bags to create replicas of your frames, cut to size. Experiment with a layout on the floor starting with the largest frames first and rearrange as necessary. Transfer the cutouts to the wall to mark a temporary placement. Affix a piece of masking tape to the back of the cutouts before attaching to the wall. Use a pencil and tape measure to mark on the wall where each frame will go. Make light marks for the outline of each picture frame.

    • 3

Use a drill to attach a piece of picture frame wire to the back of a frame. Use your hands to screw in the eyes. Choose the best type of hanger for a picture -- traditional, anchors or professional hooks -- and attach to the wall with a hammer.

    • 4

Hang pictures at eye level, about 60 inches from the floor, higher for pictures larger than 11-by-14 inches or for higher ceilings. Make sure the centers of the pictures are all at the same height by aligning them in a straight line.

    • 5

Balance larger photos, measuring at least 11-by-14 inches, with smaller photos for interest.

    • 6

Create a floating photo wall by using mats and frames the same color as the wall; this is a good technique for hanging a large number of frames. Create a gallery-style photo wall using photos of the the same size, all hung at the same level.
