You can turn old or unflattering T-shirts into stylish and fashionable items of clothing that are perfect for keeping cool in the summer months. It is a fun and easy craft project to make with kids, as it requires no gluing or sewing. Use a colored, patterned or applique T-shirt to create a cute new vest that reflects your individuality and personal style. Customized oversized T-shirts also make great gifts.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the T-shirt flat on your work surface.

    • 2

Draw a line approximately 1 inch from the left arm seam, to 5 or 6 inches below the bottom of the arm seam. Repeat with the right arm seam. These lines will form the new arm holes for your T-shirt, so the exact amount you cut off should depend on the style of T-shirt you want to create.

    • 3

Cut down both of the arm lines, ensuring that you cut evenly through both sides of the T-shirt. Try your T-shirt on to check the size of the arm holes. If adjustments are needed, remove the T-shirt and repeat Step 2, until you are happy with the size of the holes.

    • 4

Draw a new neckline onto the T-shirt. Again the depth of the neckline should depend on what style you want the vest to be. Cut down, through both sides of the T-shirt, from the right side of the T-shirt to the bottom middle part of the neckline. Cut down, through both sides of the T-shirt, from the left side of the neckline down to the other cut to complete the neckline.

    • 5

Wash the T-shirt in a washing machine to remove the washable marker. Allow it to dry before wearing.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can further customize your vest with applique, rhinestones, sequins, embroidery and beads.

  • If you are planing on cutting a low neckline, you should wear a bandeaux top underneath the T-shirt to prevent it from being too revealing.
