Joining the military is a major step and a life changing experience. The military offers a very regimented environment but can also provide job security and a relatively early retirement. Over the course of a military career you will receive valuable training and may get to travel around the world. As a prospective applicant, you need to be sure that the armed forces life is for you. Also, you need to make sure that you meet the requirements for height and weight and general health.

      Decide which branch of the military you wish to join. Research each branch by visiting their websites and learning about their histories and missions. Branches of the military include: the Army, the Navy, the Marines, the Air Force, the National Guard and the Coast Guard.

      Visit a military recruitment center. Consult the resources to find a listing of recruitment centers near you in New Jersey. WIth the recuiter, decide if you're ready to join and whether the branch you're interested in is the right choice for you.

      Take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). This is the military entrance exam that tests your proficiency in a variety of areas. Your recruiter will arrange for you to take the test.

      Go to the Military Entrance Processing Center (MEPS). Your recruiter will make an appointment for you and arrange transportation. At the MEPS, you will be given a physical examination.

      Swear in. If you pass your physical at the MEPS as well as background checks, you will be sworn in there at the MEPS.

      Attend basic training. Your recruiter will book you a slot at basic training and arrange transportation. You have until the moment you step onto the bus to back out of your contract. Basic training will last eight to ten weeks, depending on the branch. Once you pass basic training, you will be a member of the military.
