Kali Ma is a popular Goddess worshiped by traditional Wiccans, Hindus and Pagans. Though worship of Kali Ma is thought to be concentrated in India, there are altars and shrines made to the Goddess of Protection and Destruction throughout the world. There are temples for Kali Ma that are home to spiritual leaders who are available for altar construction consultation, but it is possible for anyone to arrange an altar for Kali without the help of a temple.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a convenient flat surface. Night stands, coffee tables and fireplace mantles are all possibilities. Choose a surface that is in a location you are comfortable visiting or seeing on a regular basis.

    • 2

Choose an altar cloth to place on the flat surface chosen in Step One. Red is the favorite color of Kali Ma, but you can use any color that you are comfortable with. Pick a cloth that is easy to clean or replace since altar clothes sometimes receive damage during rituals.

    • 3

Place your statue of the Goddess Kali at the center of the altar. Statues of Kali Ma are available for purchase online, at temples, and in spiritual stores catering to pagans or Wiccans.

    • 4

Pick candles for the altar and place them to the left and right of the Kali Ma statue. Candles made of pure wax are the best, but any candles made using mostly natural materials are best. Red and black candles are good choices for an altar for Kali Ma.

    • 5

Set the offering bowl directly in front of the Kali Ma statue. The offering bowl is a vessel in the shape of a traditional bowl, plate or goblet made of any type of material. Place an item precious to you or the Goddess in the offering bowl. Change the offering periodically or when performing a ritual.

Tips & Warnings

  • Red flowers, wine and incense are all acceptable Kali Ma offerings.

  • Do not leave candles or incense burning on the altar unattended.
