How to Change the Cartridge in a Brother MFC-240C
When your Brother MFC-240C printer displays the "Replace Ink" or "Ink Empty (Cartridge Color)" message, or you can't get a cartridge to work after troubleshooting a printing issue, it's time to change one or more of the four cartridges that the printer uses to print. The printer uses Brother Standard Black LC51BK, Cyan LC51C, Magenta LC51M and Yellow LC51Y ink cartridges. Whatever your situation, changing a cartridge isn't difficult. Brother has designed the MFC-240C with an easy-to-open, front access door and simple cartridge-locking mechanisms for fast cartridge removal and replacement.
Instructions

-
1
Turn on your Brother MFC-240C if it isn't already on. Check the display to see which cartridge or cartridges you need to change.
-
2
Flip down the cartridge compartment cover on the front right side of your printer.
-
-
3
Place your fingertip on the top of the lock release lever for the first used, spent or malfunctioning cartridge. Flip the lever down to reveal the cartridge, and then grasp the cartridge, pull it straight out of its slot and set it aside for disposal.
-
4
Remove the new ink cartridge from its packaging. Hold the cartridge by its sides. Pull away the protective yellow cap, and set it aside.
-
5
Check the sides of the cartridge for an arrow. Insert the cartridge into its slot in the printer oriented in the direction that the arrow points.
-
6
Lift up the lock release lever, and press it against the front of the slot until you hear or feel it click.
-
7
Repeat this process with other cartridges as needed.
-
8
Return the cartridge compartment cover to its original position on your MFC-240C, and then check the LCD. If the display has returned to its standby state, begin printing as desired. If the display asks if a cartridge is new, respond by pressing the "1" key for "Yes" or the "2" key for "No," and then print once the screen is normal.

Tips & Warnings
If the display has an "Install" message, re-open the compartment and unlock each lock release lever. Remove and reinsert each cartridge to make certain that you installed them correctly -- with the arrow on the cartridges pointing into the slots -- and then press each lever into place until you feel or hear the click. Close the cover and check the display again.
Brother doesn't recommend using refilled cartridges or cartridges by other manufacturers. Brother will not provide warranty coverage for damage caused by using either types.
