How to Draw Kittens

How to Draw Kittens thumbnail
Use a well-sharpened pencil to draw kittens.

A realistic drawing of a group of kittens can be created using a freshly sharpened pencil and a pad of paper. After drawing a basic outline of a kitten, you can add unique coloring details to the coat. For example, draw stripes for a tabby cat or patches for a calico. After drawing your first kitten, add more kittens to the page to show a group sitting or playing together. When drawing a group of kittens, vary the detail of each additional kitten and overlap the bodies.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a pencil sharpener to sharpen a pencil to a fine, long point. The long edge on the pencil will allow you to draw broad lines, while the fine point will allow you to fill in smaller spaces.

    • 2

Draw a circle for the outline of the kitten's head. Place triangles at the outer edges of the top of the head for the ears.

    • 3

Draw the outline of the kitten's body. If you would like to draw a kitten that is sitting, draw a vertical oval just below the head, with the top of the oval narrower than the bottom. If you would like to draw a kitten standing up, draw a horizontal oval running horizontally from the head.

    • 4

Add the front legs and paws. Place the elbows midway between the bottom of the torso and the head. Add the outline of the hind legs and the tail. The tail can be drawn in a downward position if the kitten is sitting or up if the kitten is standing.

    • 5

Draw the kitten's face. Add two evenly spaced circles with small triangles at the edge of each circle to create the kitten's eye. Draw an upside down triangle to create the kitten's nose. Add nostrils into the sides of the triangle and give it a light bulge in the middle of the top. Draw a short line starting at the bottom point of the nose and continuing about halfway to the bottom of the circle. Draw a crescent-shaped line for the mouth. Add whiskers near each sides of the cat's mouth by drawing slightly curved horizontal lines.

    • 6

Add details to the kitten's body. Use the fine end of the pencil to draw tiger stripes for a tabby cat, or use the edge of the pencil to fill in the outline to create a solidly colored kitten.

    • 7

Repeat the process to place additional kittens in your drawing. Vary the paw placement, body style and detail for each additional kitten.
