How to Draw Maryland
Drawing maps of the 50 states is a great way for students to learn United States geography. On each state map, students can identify major cities, the Capitol and bordering states. While the majority of the states are rectangular in shape, and relatively easy to replicate, there are a few states that provide a fun drawing challenge, like the irregularly shaped state of Maryland. Many people and publications have tried to define the shape, including The Baltimore Sun, which described its odd shape as an "antique flintlock pistol pointed at West Virginia."

1
Print out a map of the state of Maryland from the Internet, or buy a map at a bookstore to use as a visual reference.
-
2
Draw a straight line left to right approximately three-and-a-half inches long using a ruler. This is the top portion of the outline.
-
-
3
Draw a one-and-a-half inch line perpendicular to the point where your straight line ended. Then draw a one-inch line perpendicular to the point where that line ends. Draw a one-inch, diagonal line pointing downward at a 120-degree angle from where your last line ended. This completes the right side of the outline.
-
4
Draw a half-inch straight line, right to left, from the lowest point of the last diagonal you drew, to create the bottom portion of the state. Draw a two-inch diagonal pointing upward at a 20-degree angle from the end of that line. Then draw another two-inch diagonal pointing downward at a 20-degree angle from the end point of the last diagonal. Draw a one-and-half inch diagonal facing upward at a 50-degree angle from the end point of the previous diagonal. Draw another two-inch diagonal facing upward at a 30-degree angle from the end point of that diagonal. Lastly, draw a one-and-a-half inch diagonal facing downward at a 60-degree angle from the end point of the previous diagonal. This gives you a rough outline of the bottom portion of Maryland, but consult the map to sketch in a more detailed rendering of the choppy and irregular edges.

5
Draw a one-inch straight line, facing upward, from the bottom of the previous diagonal you drew. It should meet the starting point of the top portion of the map. This completes your outline of the state of Maryland. Color in as needed.
