How to Get Your 1099 Wage Statement for 2009

Form 1099 is a common IRS tax form that comes in many different varieties. A common 1099 form used to report wages to contractors is Form 1099 Misc. To obtain copies of past 1099 forms, an individual can go back to the business that paid the contractor for services during that tax year, or go through the Internal Revenue Service if a paper return was filed.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the business that issued the 1099 form in the tax year you are seeking, for example 2009. Ask to speak with a representative in the human resources department if the company has one. If not, ask for the accounting department or whomever deals with year-end tax information.

    • 2

Ask for a copy of the 1099 from the representative. Provide your current mailing address or arrange to pick up a copy of the 1099 at the business's office.

    • 3

Complete IRS Form 4506 to get a copy of a 1099 form filed for the tax year 2009 if the company is no longer in business and you are unable to find a representative to help you. Form 4506 is a request for a copy of the complete tax return and all supporting documents filed with the return, including W-2 and 1099 forms. As of 2011, there is a $57 charge for obtaining a copy of the complete return.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you filed taxes electronically, a 1099 form will not be on file with the IRS. Form 4506 will only be able to provide the information if a paper return with documents was sent during the 2009 tax year.

  • Do not send IRS Form 4506-T. While it is free of charge, this form will only provide a transcript of the return and no supporting documents.
