How to Connect a Swimming Pool Heater
Swimming pool heaters keep the water at a relaxing temperature throughout the day, allowing swimmers to enjoy the pool during times most avoid stepping in the frigid water. Once you install a heater, the water gets pushed through the swimming pool filter, into the heater --- where it's warmed --- and back out into the pool. While the basic installation process remains the same, it's always best to refer to the instructions for your heater's specific model. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Concrete slab near the pool
- Electrical outlet
- Gas line
- PVC pipe (check manual for the specific length)
Instructions

1
Turn off and disconnect the pool pump before you begin work on the pool.
-
2
Place the water heater on the concrete slab. Make sure the heater sits 3 to 4 feet away from the pool to avoid any damage to it.

3
Follow the instructions in your manual to run the PVC piping from the heater to the fuel pump. The instructions vary by model, so it's important that you follow the manual step-by-step.

4
Have a licensed electrician run the electric from the back of the pool heater to the nearest breaker box. Also, have a licensed technician from your gas company run the gas line to the heater. While it's possible to do this step yourself, only do it if you know exactly what to do. Hooking the gas and electric up improperly could create a potentially dangerous situation.

5
Reconnect the pool pump and turn it on to test the heater. If the heater works properly, warm water comes out of the jets on the side of the pool. Once all the water coming into the filter reaches a warm temperature, the heater only kicks on to maintain the water's warmth.
