How to Draw Tiger Outlines

Draw a tiger outline with a graphite pencil.

An outline provides the basic formation and shape of a drawing. It can be a challenge because an outline seems simple, but in fact it has to be accurate to communicate exactly what the subject is. A tiger is a suitable animal to practice drawing outlines since it has a distinctive, large shape. Once you can master drawing the outline of a tiger, you can then begin to fill in the details of its face and intricate fur pattern.

Instructions

    • 1

Observe your tiger image closely to see how its body is positioned, along with its proportions and dimensions. This focuses your attention on the outline, rather than the details of its face or fur pattern. Note whether it is walking, running, lying down or getting ready to pounce.

    • 2

Sketch a series of guidelines to construct your tiger outline. For instance, draw a large round circle for the shape of its body, an elongated sausage shape for each of its legs and a circle for its head. Sketch these lightly with your graphite pencil as they are simple a way to proportion the animal, rather than being the final image.

    • 3

Mark roughly where you will draw each of its facial features. First, draw a circle for the shape of the tiger's head, then draw a cross in the middle of the circle. This helps you position the eyes, nose and mouth. Add two teardrop shapes above the intersection of the cross, angling them inwards for the tiger's eyes.

    • 4

Add the tiger's mouth and nose. The nose is a small, upside down triangle positioned at the bottom of the circle, directly below the cross. Beneath the nose, sketch the tiger's mouth consisting of a curved line. On either side of the nose and mouth, sketch two large semi-circles which represent the furry cheeks of the tiger.

Follow the outer edge of the guidelines you have drawn to connect the different shapes together. By doing so, you can begin to create the outline of the tiger. Remember to refer back to your original image and copy the contours of the tiger's body. Note how its back has a slight dip in it as it walks.

Rub out the guidelines carefully with your kneaded eraser. You need to avoid removing the outline of the tiger so be patient in rubbing them out.
