How to Use Yarn in Quilting
Yarn is not a common material for finishing a quilt, but there are few textiles that work better for finishing a comforter quickly. If you're making a gift for a baby or small child, you might not want to put hours into hand-quilting a quilt. Tied quilts are softer and take the abuse that small children will give when "loving" a favorite blanket. Skip the painstaking tiny stitches a normal quilt requires and tie your quilt with yarn ties to finish it in hours instead of months.
Instructions

1
Lay the basted quilt on a large table or a clean floor on top of a sheet. Lay the quilt with the quilt top facing up.
-
2
Cut an 18-inch piece of washable yarn. Thread a yarn needle with the yarn, but don't tie a knot in the yarn.
-
-
3
Place the point of the needle in the center of the quilt. Push the yarn needle down through all three layers of the basted quilt. Pull the needle out on the underside of the quilt. Push the needle back up through all three layers of the quilt 1/4 inch away from where the needle when through the first time.
-
4
Pull the needle back up through the quilt. Pull the yarn through until the trailing end of the yarn is as long as your thumb. Cut off the yarn from the needle so that both ends of the yarn left on the quilt are the same length.
-
5
Tie the yarn ends together with a surgeon's knot. Make this knot like a square knot, except push the end through the loop twice on the first half of the knot.
-
6
Make another yarn stitch and knot 6 inches away from the first one in any direction. Continue making yarn ties every 6 inches in every direction. You can place the ties in a grid formation, put a certain number in every quilt block or just randomly place the ties. The placement design is up to you and your taste. Make ties every 6 inches or so until the entire quilt has been tied.

Tips & Warnings
Cut a short piece of yarn and soak it in hot water for 15 minutes to make sure the color won't run during washing. If the water isn't perfectly clear after soaking and squeezing out the yarn, get another kind of yarn for your quilt.
