How to Make a Thong Out of Fabric
Thongs are a type of underwear worn under tight-fitting garments to prevent visible panty lines. Some women also wear thongs to feel more glamorous or attract men. Making your own thongs is a quick sewing project for beginners or anyone who wants to save money on underwear. You can make thongs with t-shirts, or any comfortable, stretchy scraps of fabric you have lying around. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Card stock
- Fabric chalk
- Lining fabric
- Lace or other luxury fabric
- Rotary mat and cutter
- Measuring tape
- Needle and thread
- 1 elastic band, 1 inch wide

Trace the crotch of your favorite pair of panties onto a piece of cardstock to make a template. Add an inch at the top of the template to accommodate the waistband.

Cut out the template and trace it over a piece of stretchy fabric for your lining. Cut out the stretchy fabric crotch using a rotary mat and cutter.

Trace the template over a piece of lace, silk or another luxury fabric, if desired. Cut out the luxury fabric crotch using a rotary mat and cutter.

Measure your favorite pair of panties from the back center of the waistband to where the bottom of the panties meet the crotch. Cut out 1-inch-wide strips of stretchy fabric and luxury fabric equal in length to this measurement.

Hold the thin end of the crotch liner to one end of the stretchy fabric strip. Trim the strips as needed to ensure a smooth transition from crotch to strip. Repeat this process with the luxury fabric.

Sew the luxury fabric crotch over the stretchy fabric crotch, using a zig-zag stitch. Hold the stretchy fabric taut as you sew. Repeat this process with the fabric strips.

Sew the thin end of the crotch to one end of the strip, using a zig-zag stitch.

Measure around your waist or hips where you want the top of the thong to sit. Cut an elastic band equal in length to this measurement, plus 1 inch. If desired, cut a similar strip of ribbon or luxury fabric.

Sew the ribbon or luxury fabric over the elastic band, using a zig-zag stitch and holding the elastic taut.

Overlap the elastic band one inch. Take the thin fabric part of the crotch and sew it to the overlapping band.

Sew the top of the crotch piece behind the other end of the elastic waistband to complete the thong.
