How to Carve Headstones
Carve headstones using sandblasting or etching, the two most widely-used forms of headstone carving. A sandblaster uses a highly pressurized stream of air with sand in it to carve headstones. Etching uses a laser to do the job, while sandblasting creates deeper engraved lines. Use etching for black granite, as it becomes white and contrasts with the stone.
Things You'll Need
- Goggles
- Design Stencil
- Utility Knife
- Carbon paper
- Laser etching machine
Instructions
-
Sandblasting
-
1
Use a stencil to sandblast precisely. Place the stencil proportionately in the desired location on the headstone.
-
2
Create guiding lines by lightly cutting over the stencil design with the utility knife, just enough to follow the pattern.
-
-
3
Sandblast out the design, carefully going over the trace design lines. Hold the sandblaster firmly and keep as steady a hand as possible. Point the sandblaster at the design about an inch away and go over the design as needed for the desired depth.
-
4
Wipe away all the debris and stone dust with a soft cloth.
Etching
-
5
Place the stencil design proportionately and evenly over the headstone.
-
6
Trace the design using a pencil and carbon paper. Lay the carbon paper flat over the headstone and press firmly with the pencil to create light outlines.
-
7
Etch the design into the headstone carefully with the laser etching machine. If you don't have this tool, purchase it from an engraver or masonry shop.
-
8
Polish the finished etching design and stone with a soft cloth after allowing the stone to cool off for half an hour.
