How to Use ISTE in My Classroom

Technology in the classroom means a brighter future.

Too often, teachers receive grants for technology that ends up underused and under-appreciated. Without proper focus and goals, technology in the classroom can be inefficiently utilized by students without passing on the important values necessary for entering the work force. The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) provides an effective way for teachers to incorporate standards of technology into their subject area curriculum by connecting teachers and administrators with each other to establish and use best practices.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect with other teachers. ISTE provides programs and chat rooms for teachers and administrators to discuss principles of technology with other teachers and administrators. This level of collaboration will ensure that the best practices and information will travel the fastest.

    • 2

Use pre-established technology curriculum. ISTE offers text books with curriculum for students, teachers, and administrators, known as NETS, or National Educational Technology Standards, as well as an online forum to exchange information on lesson plans and classroom strategies for effective teaching.

    • 3

Develop your own curriculum. Using NETS and ISTE curriculum and ideas is a great jumping off point for enhancing your teaching. Use the textbooks and information and contribute your own ideas for writing prompts, review strategies and projects, then submit your ideas to the ISTE Wikispace to share with other professionals.
