Practice crochet stitches on a short chain.

Once you've mastered the basic crochet stitches, you might feel like it's time for something a little more elaborate. Whether you prefer making afghans or garments, three-dimensional crochet stitches take your work to the next level. The double crochet cluster is one of the first textured stitches crafters can learn. You must know how to double crochet before attempting this stitch, as it's a natural extension of the stitch.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a loop at the end of the yarn strand and slip the crochet hook into the loop. Make 20 chain stitches to create a base for the practice piece.

    • 2

Skip the first chain next to the hook and double crochet in every chain after that to the end of the row. Chain three times and turn.

    • 3

Make a double crochet stitch on the second stitch from the hook. Double crochet two more times. This will give you a good base upon which to make the clusters.

    • 4

Make a double crochet stitch, but skip the last step where you pull the yarn through the last two loops. You have a stitch below and two loops on the hook.

    • 5

Yarn-over and make another double crochet stitch in the same hole you used for the first stitch. Again, stop before pulling the yarn through the last two loops. You now have two stitches below and three loops on the hook.

    • 6

Make a third double crochet stitch in the same hole as before. At the end of this stitch, pull the yarn through all the loops on the hook. This creates the finished double crochet cluster stitch.

Tips & Warnings

  • Slip stitch once through the same hole you made the three stitches in and pull the yarn taut. This creates a bobble stitch, used in popcorn crochet patterns.
