How to Ping a URL

You can ping a website URL to figure out the response time and other relevant details for that website. Though many stand-alone applications provide a similar service, you can test and ping a website from your computer without the need for any third-party tools. You must have a valid Internet connection and open the command prompt in Windows to successfully ping a website.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the "Start" menu, and type "cmd" in the search bar. The command prompt window will open.

    • 2

Type "ping" followed by the URL that you want to ping. For instance, if you want to ping www.example.com, then type "ping www.example.com" in the command prompt window.

    • 3

Hit "Enter" key to get the results. The results will include the number of data packets sent and received along with any data losses, IP address of the website that you ping and the ping time, which is usually expressed in milliseconds.

The ping time basically gives you the load time for a particular website. If your website is down or is taking too long to respond, you can ping it again and compare the ping time with the previously recorded ping times. If there is a difference, then you must use the assistance of your webmaster to sort the issue out since users aren't very happy about having to wait too long before the website loads.
