How to Import from MSN Space to Blogger

MSN Live Spaces made blogging more accessible with your own blog available at the click of a button from your Windows Live Messenger account. In late 2010, Live Spaces joined with WordPress and Windows Live users were asked to import their Live Spaces blogs to new WordPress blogs through a simple, guided process. With other blogging tools like Blogger available, you may think it is time to move on from WordPress. Luckily, you don't have to leave your old blog behind; you can import as much or as little of it as you want to your new Blogger account.

Instructions

  1. Exporting Your Blog

    • 1

Log in to your WordPress blog. Go to your WordPress dashboard and scroll down until you see "Tools" in the menu on the left. Click it and select "Export" from the "Available Tools" menu.

    • 2

Click "Export" from the "Export Options" menu that opens in the main frame of your WordPress window. This is the only free option; you can also select "Guided Transfer" for $119, but you can only have your content transferred to a site you host yourself through one of WordPress's partners. It is not practical for this purpose.

    • 3

Fill out your export filters from the available drop-down menus. Here you can choose a date range of posts to import, select authors if it is a group blog, categories, content and statuses. Leaving every option set to "All" will transfer all content from your WordPress/MSN Live Space into a downloadable .XML file. Click "Download Export File" when your filters are set.

    Import to Blogger

    • 4

Create your Blogger account. You cannot begin the importing process until you have somewhere to import your blog to. Log on to Blogger.com and set up a new account, or log in through an existing Google account.

    • 5

Create your Blogger.com blog and URL. On your Blogger dashboard (the homepage once you are logged into Blogger), click the "Create a Blog" link. Enter a blog title and your desired URL and fill in the word verification box below. Click "Continue" to choose a template and complete the process. Your blog is ready to post on.

    • 6

Click the "New Post" button on your new blog and immediately click the "Settings" tab at the top of the posting page. Click "Import Blog."

    • 7

Click the "Choose File" button and navigate to the .XML file you downloaded from your WordPress blog. Select it and fill in the word verification. Blogger will not automatically publish your posts unless you check the box indicating this option located below the word verification box; it will simply save posts to your account for you to publish at your discretion.

    • 8

Click "Import Blog." Your blog will be automatically uploaded to your Blogger account.
